i) PREPARING FOR YOUR MOVE
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR IMPORTING HOUSEHOLD GOODS TO THAILAND
PASSPORT
All travelers are required to submit their original passport to Asian Tigers to enable th
eprocessing of the shipment for clearance.
VISA & WORK PERMIT
The consular office of your host country’s embassy is the best place to start when determining what types of documents, including visas, permits and registration requirement, you’ll need to relocate. Consulates can often provide information and advice on many other aspects of your move as well.
ii) PASSPORT
A valid passport and appropriate visa are required for all persons entering Thailand. If one enters the country without a visa, extensions of stay cannot be granted
Each member of a family should have his/her own passport; if a child is included on a parent’s passport, the parent cannot leave Thailand without the child. If only one parent leaves with children), written permission from the other parent is required.
Visas
Visas are issued according to the stated purpose of the visit. Non – immigrant visas are valid for 90 days for purposes other than tourism, and applicants must submit documentation showing the purposes of the stay. For stays longer than 90 days or for extensions, approval must be obtained in advance from the Thai Immigration Services.
Visas are issued by the nearest consulate, and only cash or money order is accepted as payment for the fee. Application may be made by mail or in person.
iii) WORK PERMITS
Work permits are issued by the Labor Department in Bangkok, normally for the duration of the visa. Work permits are usually obtained by the individual’s company. One cannot own or register a vehicle, receive a salary, or begin employment until the work permit is obtained.
USEFUL INFORMATION / CUSTOMS REGULATIONS

i) |
Persons possessing a 1 year non-immigrant visa, with a valid 1 year work permit at the time shipment is imported can import one sea and one air shipment of used household goods duty free from country of last residence. |

ii) |
Returning Thai residents having stayed abroad of more than 12 months can ship back one shipment of used household goods duty free. |
|
iii) |
Foreigners, if holding a Thai resident visa, can also import from country of last residence one shipment of used household goods duty free (providing that they have been abroad for more than 12 months). |
|
iv) |
Retirees – de not automatically qualify for any duty free – Please consult with our office prior to shipment for advice. |
| b) |
Personal and household effects must be imported no later than six months after the first arrival of the importer in Thailand with a non – immigration ‘B’ stamp in passport to qualify for duty free status. |
| c) |
Persons under a diplomatic passport, Thai Government recognized aid organizations & Board of Investment (BOI), who are allowed to stay in Thailand for a certain period (usually one-two years) can also import one sea and one air shipment of used household goods duty free. |
| d) |
Shippers whiteout duty free status can still import but are subject to payment of duties and taxes. |
| e) |
Heavy import taxes are placed on automobiles, approx. 213–308% CIF (see above note on autos/motorbikes). |
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
| a) |
Due to the very narrow and congested streets in Bangkok it is very difficult to move 40’ containers to shippers’ residences. |
| b) |
While 20’ containers can be delivered to some residences it is advisable to avoid loose – packing the containers. It is recommended to pack all goods into wooden liftvans. This ensures that the goods can be brought directly to the residences without re – handling. |
| c) |
To effect customs clearance, Transpo will need copies of the inventory, Ocean bill of lading and the shipper’s original passport. |
| d) |
While the shipper may import more than one shipment he remains subject to the full import duties. Asian Tigers recommends to contact us first prior to arrival in Thailand. |
| e) |
Diplomatic shipments normally take 10 days after arrival to process diplomatic approval and will incur demurrage charges. |
Duty free approval for the shipment will be under these qualifications:
For all foreigners (except diplomats)
- Shipper should enter Thailand with a 90 days “class B” (business) non – immigrant visa.
- Shipper has one year work permit (without any condition) or one year visa which has been stamped by Thai Immigration in Thailand.
- Household goods must arrive within six months after the transferee’s first arrival with non – immigrant visa.
- Household goods must come from the country in which the transferee has been working before moving to Thailand.
- Must contain used items (not new).
- Thai Customs allows one of each kind of electrical appliances. Double items will be dutiable.
- Customs will allow duty free import to one sea freight and air freight only.
Documents required for clearing shipments :
- Original passport
- Original work permit
- Original bill of lading
- Packing list
- Authorized letter and customs entry from (prepared by Asian Tigers)
- If duty free is not possible, clearance can still take place with payment of duty / tax.
- Pet imports are able to be done as excess baggage or cargo – contact us for more specific help.
iv) PROHIBITED ARTICLES
- Firearms and ammunition
- Short – wave radios
- Pornographic literature
- Motor vehicles
For non-diplomatic automobiles and motorcycles the shipper must obtain approval from the Ministry of commerce prior to forwarding the vehicles from origin. Import permits are not normally granted to foreigners.
v) DUTIABLE ITEMS
- Wines & spirits require special import permit to be obtained before shipment. Subject to tax/duty approx. 182–343%
Vehicles(for non diplomatic automobiles & motorcycles the shipper must obtain approval from the Ministry of Commerce www.moc.go.th prior to forwarding the vehicle. Import Permits are not normally granted to foreigners). Subject to high duty & tax approx. 213%-308% cars & 98% motorcycles.
vi) PETS
An import Permit is required in advance of shipment. There is no quarantine in Thailand, provided the animal arrives with a valid Health Certificate issued from authorities at point of origin. Note that pets arriving separately to the owner as air cargo are subject to duty at 30% of CIF value.
