What’s Available
Bangkok offers a wide variety of modern apartment and house in numerous locations throughout the city and suburbs.
Apartments yield the widest selection with most offering security, swimming pools and other shared facilities. In general most are spacious with separate living areas for domestic staff.
Houses are available but good houses downtown are more difficult to obtain and tend to be older property. A larger selection of more modern housing is available in the Moobans (secure house estate) and on the outskirts of the city near the international schools.
Furnished and Unfurnished
Approximately 70 percent of apartments are rented furnished. Most accommodations include the major items of furniture including beds, dining-room table, sofas, and armchairs. Most furnished apartments include an equipped kitchen, inclusive of a large refrigerator, gas or electric cooker, and hot water, etc. Landlords usually do not provide dishwashers or microwave ovens. Washers and dryers are sometimes provided. Soft goods such as linen, cutlery, etc. Are not included.
Utilities
Some utilities are included in the rent, but this varies and should be established before signing a lease. Water and electricity are billed monthly. Bills are paid to the landlord or at the bank; you can pay the various utilities directly, but most people opt for the convenience provided by the bank, which collects a small fee for this service. Installation / connection is normally provided by the landlord.
The Pre-assignment Trip
Where you live while on assignment may well be the single most important factor in determining whether your stay in the country is an enjoyable experience or an ordeal.
Many considerations enter into the decision as to where to live. For families with children, proximity or reliable transportation to schools may be paramount. For others, it may be convenience to the work place or, if the work of the relocating family member requires frequent travel, to an airport.
The best way to find housing that meets your family’s requirements of size, location, and budget is to make a preliminary trip to the destination country. If the employer under writes a home search trip, the firm may also provide other relocation services such as professional counseling to determine your itinerary, and perhaps make appointments for you in the destination country. It is advisable to take advantage of all the assistance offered.
The preliminary trip may incorporate visiting schools, medical facilities, and neighborhood accommodations.
